In the piece I had chosen, “Stucture, Number 2” by Sam Francis, I thought the colors and the minimalism drew me in; however, when looking further into it, I started to see letters and numbers. I saw the letters A, H, F, and P, as well as the number 4. As someone who loves pop culture, I saw the A and H and immediately thought of the “American Horror Story” series. I’ve seen clips of the show here and there, but never the entire series, so this makes me want to watch it. I’ve also realized how the paint splatters look like those slasher scenes in true crime/horror scenes when the blood starts splattering on the walls (not to sound morbid, but once I started talking about “American Horror Story,” I started thinking of some my favorite true crime shows.)
On a more light-hearted note, when I first came across the piece, I was instantly reminded of an art project my little brother got me into when we were kids. He once made these interesting glass ornaments for Christmas years ago by melting down crayons. I don’t believe I made one, but the process enthralled me. As someone with Autism, I am quickly captivated by anything hands-on, which made me a bit angry with myself for not participating. Considering I was the one my brother would ask to build all his Lego sets, which reminds me of, doing hands-on things was something I would do and lose track of time.
This piece evokes some good memories while also revealing how much I miss doing any hands-on project, especially building Lego sets for my brother (even though he’s a teenager.) This reminds me of certain Lego sets I’d made in the past; however, I’m struggling to remember which ones they were, other than SpongeBob’s Pineapple. This reminds me of when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I’d throw blueberries at my fireplace and call it “Blueberry Art” (I’m still shocked that my mom didn’t punish me for that, she thought it was funny but was a bit miffed that I was throwing some of my brother’s favorite fruit at the wall surrounding the fireplace.)
Overall, I’m glad I chose this piece; it’s incredible. Not just for its minimalism but for the emotion and memories it evoked. The abundance of white space whole having multiple colors tied it together for me and kept me thinking. It’s always good to experience art like that, isn’t it?
